  1. There was a boy named Jack who lived in a cottage with his mother and had a Cow. They drank milk and ate cheese.

One day the Cow dried up so Jack’s mother said, “No more milk and cheese. She’s too much meat for the two of us, so take her away, see what you get.”

So Jack loaded up his wagon and went to his neighbour. Jack’s neighbour said, “Here. I’ll give you these magic beans for that Cow.” Jack took the beans home.

When Jack got home his mother planted some of the beans in the garden. Then they ate beans. A month or so later they started eating fresh beans out of the garden. Then they planted more beans.

Pretty soon Jack and his mother had too many beans and nowhere to put them. The cottage was crowded. So Jack’s mother said, “The cottage is crowded we can’t eat these beans. So take them away, see what you get.”

Jack loaded up his wagon and went to his neighbour. Jack’s neighbour said, “Here. I’ll give you these Geese for those beans. They have soft, downy feathers and lay eggs with golden yolks and they are delicious.” Jack took the Geese home.

Pretty soon Jack and his mother slept on deep feather beds with downy pillows. They ate eggs with golden yolks and beans. They feasted on Goose and froi gras. But the beans piled up. And the downy pillows and feather mattresses did too and the smoked Goose.

So Jack’s mother said, “The cottage is crowded and we can’t eat or even sleep on all these things. So take them away, see what you get.”

Jack loaded up his wagon and went to his neighbour. Jack’s neighbour said, “Here. I’ll give you this harp. You can play it and the neighbours will come to listen. They’ll bring beer and wine.” Jack took the harp home.

Pretty soon Jack and his mother were drinking fine beer and wine. They slept on feather beds with downy cushions, feasted on Geese and froi gras. For breakfast they had eggs with golden yolks and plenty of beans. But the beans piled up and the downy pillows did too.

So Jack’s mother said, “The cottage is crowded and we can’t eat or even sleep on all these things. So take them away, see what you get.”

So Jack loaded up his wagon and went to his neighbour. Jack’s neighbour said, “Here. Here is a little piece of gold.” Jack took the gold home.

After a long time, while Jack and his mother drank wine and fine beer, while they slept on feather beds with downy pillows and feasted on Goose and foie gras, and had eggs with golden yolks and beans for dinner, the house got crowded with gold.

Every once in a while Jack took a wagon of things to his neighbour to trade for gold. The gold piled up.

Do you know the trouble with gold? The trouble with gold is giants can smell it! They’ll come stomping from far off to TAKE IT. Sure enough, a really giant, giant smelled Jack’s gold and came stomping. He said, “Fee! Fie! Fo! Fum! I smell some gold so here I come!”

When the giant stomped to Jack’s cottage he leaned WAY down and peered in Jack's window. Then the giant sat on a hill and started to cry.

The giant cried, “Jack? That pile of gold is TOO BIG for me. It won't fit in my pockets!”

So Jack said, “Here. Take these magic beans.” and Jack gave some beans to the giant.
